Space Timeline

Space timeline Reading tasks.

Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this reading activity is to: increase
our knowledge of space exploration and understand
how our knowledge and ideas about space have
changed
over time (science). We are also learning to
read non-fiction
texts and use our writing skills to share our
understanding
of this
topic and our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task
we will
need to
use the skills of ‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language,
Symbols
and
Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main
ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions
in texts.
I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the
main ideas in text.
I am learning to summarise the main ideas in the texts I read.
(from the Karoro Programme of work for Reading)

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can show….
-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.

Focus

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our
science topic;
SPACE. Your aim is to read and understand the timeline
reading and use this
knowledge to complete the reading activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good
time to ask questions about anything you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check
spelling and punctuation. Then do a self assessment and a peer
assessment
. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom
walls.
Think about how how our theories/ideas and
understandings
about the universe and Earth’s place in it has
changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions
please put them in chronological
order (time order, oldest first)

1) What are two things that Galileo discovered?
1610, He made the first  telescopic
observation of the night sky,
discover jupiter moons
, lunar craters and the
different phases of Venus.

2) Who discovered the first asteroid?
1801, Nesa The frst asteroid, Ceres,
was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi.

3) What was Sputnik 1?
1957, Sputnik 1 was a
satellite that sent signal.

4) In what year was NASA founded?
And what does NASA mean?
1958, National astronauts In Space administration .

5) Who was the first woman in space?
And where was she from?
1963, Russian cosmonaut Valentina
Tereshkova became the first woman in space.

6)Where did Mariner 4 fly past?
1965 , Mariner flew past mars.

7)In what year did apollo land on the moon?
1969, apollo landed on the moon.

8) What country launched
Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space?
1977, America launched
Voyager 1 and 2. They reached
juitper in 1979 and saturn in 1980.

9) What happened that led to all space
shuttles being grounded for 3 years?
1986, Space shuttle Challenger Exploded
after launch, killing the seven astronauts on board.
This led to all shuttles being grounded for 3 years.

10) When was the international space station
completed?
1986 The final part was finished in 2010.

11)How long did it take for the Cassini probe to arrive
at Saturn
2004, Cassini probe took 7 years to reach saturn.

12) What was interesting about New Horizon’s
information
about Pluto?2015 NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft
arrived at
Pluto after
travelling for nine years and a total distance of 4.6
billion miles.
Data sent to the Earth showed that Pluto is fifty
miles larger
than
was first thought..

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution to
  2. our understanding of space? Why?
  3. (summarising key ideas)
I think Galileo Galilei because he made the first
telescopic
observation of the night sky with telescope he made.
Galileo
Galilei made the first telescope to look fuller than the
naked eye.
He discover Jupiter’s moons, lunar craters and the
different phases
of Venus.

    2) What do you think was the most
important machine or
invention in helping us investigate space?
Why? (summarising key ideas)
I think it was the space satellite because
it took pictures
of lots of the planets and the surroundings
of our solar system.
Also the probes because they reached further than
anyone could
go in our solar system and discovered our universe.

    3) What would you like to investigate
about space? Why?
I would like to investigate the black holes in
our  universe and
why our skies are blue.

If you go/ near a black hole:
When you go into or go near a black hole your
feet feel a strong gravitational pull then your
head because they are
closer to the black hole .Then your body will
stretch apart you are so strong
that your body is completely torn apart .

Why are our skies blue:
Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air
in Earth's atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other
colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves.
This is why we see a blue sky most of the time. ...
Also, the surface of Earth has reflected and scattered the light.
This information is from NASA space place.

Create and Describe Your Own Planet -
Description writing task
Term 2 Weeks 5-6

Purpose of this piece of writing is to:

Learning Intentions
I am learning to use language features to make my writing
interesting and engaging for the reader.
I am learning to use topic-specific vocabulary.
I am learning to include Te Reo Māori words in my writing.

I will be successful when I can show….
-I have used some language features to make my writing
interesting and engaging (simile, metaphor, alliteration,
onomatopoeia, rhyme)
-I have carefully chosen some topic specific words to include

Focus

We are continuing to look at descriptive writing. This week you are writing a descriptive
piece of writing to promote your imaginary planet. You aim is to convince people to move to
your planet. You want your writing to allow the reader to be able to imagine what it is like on your planet.

First, we will look at an excerpt of a video describing the
moon from the Avatar movie. Click here to get to video= Pandora.

Second, we will discuss together what you will need in your
work to make it successful and look at how to plan our work. Then you will plan your work and check
with a teacher before you start writing.

Third, do your piece
of writing.

Fourth, complete you piece of writing. Remember to proof-read (check spelling and punctuation)

Nibiru Is a tropical planet in the middle of an asteroid belt called Starnga. Starnga is
in the middle of a solar system called Klet. Nibiru is only one of the planets that orbits
around in Starnga,  but unlike our solar system Nibiru orbits a sun but it also has a mini sun
that orbits it. This mini sun is a royal blue ra (sun) that follows Nibiru around. Nibiru is habitable
for humans to live on.

To get to Nibiru  you have to travel through
a black hole called Chumbo. It is between Jupiter and Saturn.
Chumbo is very dark  misty, cold and deep. When you travel through
Chumbo you can hear calls from the god of the dark. His voice is dark
and cold because its as pango(black) as it sounds, like an echo through a tunnel.
To get to Nibiru you have to travel on a rocket ship called 222 Dark Flyer, because that is the
only ship that can travel you to Klet.

Where you live on Nibiru is actually inside the planet. On the outside of Nibiru there is a dark
crust o
f toka(rock) but on the inside, where you live, the air is as fresh as a fiddle. Nibiru is covered in
water and beautiful ngahere pārūrū (rainforest). It is home to many Nibiruan creatures.

The natural plant in Nibiru is called plus. Plus is fruit that tastes like lollies but produces
vitamins and oxygen.
The indigenous people of Nibiru are called Windies. The Windies are one of the guardians that
help this plant grow. The plus plant keeps Windies and humans alive by producing oxygen and
food.

Windies are yellow dwarfs that are cautious of humans or someone new that comes to their
tribe. Windies have lived on Nibiru for millions and millions of years. Windies  keep Nibiru
and the plus plant alive by
saying prayers and singing songs. If the Windies population died then there would be no Nibiru……..
But once when the Windies didn’t know about the humans or other living creatures there
was an attack.Once Roman people came through Chumbo to Kelt and landed on Nibiru.
Nibiru was in great danger because the
Windies did not know who they were or what they were doing there. The Windies stayed
hidden for several weeks. They became hungry and the planet slowly started to die because
they were not there to look after the Plus plant.
All the Roman people were pulling out all the plus plants. Windies were getting very annoyed
and they came to a conclusion to finish the Roman people. There was a war. The Windies
vanished Roman people back to
Earth and ever since no one has gone to Nibiru.

You should go to Nibiru because there is amazing culture and beautiful ngahere
pārūrū (rainforests) and in summer there are amazing spirit light shows from the Windies that
have past away. Nibiru holds lots of fun and adventures. But you must be warned if you go
to the sacred root of the island or if you abuse the Windies culture the Windies will become
your enemy ……..
